I'm a bit confused over how to price by the line. Does this mean the physical
line which in an indented index would contain the main heading, or sub (sub)
heading, but in a run in style could contain many sub headings, or are you
considering each heading or sub (sub) heading a line.

Also, thanks to those who helped out with my question about how to figure how
many lines I had available for the index I was working on. I came in just under.
Whew!

I have an arrangement with the publisher which pays by the line. We agree
that the line count is determined by entering the Cindex command:
print/file=null. We don't factor in the line length, which varies from index
to index, assuming that over time, the line length averages out. I find that
on the whole, the per line compensation is about the same as the per page of
ms compensation paid by other publishers is about the same, and that both
roughly equal the hourly rate I charge for publishers that pay that way. In
estimating a job, I often will figure the compensation all three ways and
average them together, then factor in such considerations as rush job,
special requests, etc. I hope my experience in this regard is helpful to you.

I would like to know if anyone is building a front end to WAIS that would
offer more sophisticated search capabilities than WAIS by itself, and for
use on full text of documents.

Since the project I'm working on is a database of millions of documents, I'm
only concerned with work that involves substantial amounts of full text of
large documents, preferably technical report length, though journal articles
would do.

I'm familiar with TREC.

Any responses will be appreciated, either to the list or direct to me. If I
get enough feedback I will post a summary of the replies here.

Dear group--
I recently received a call from Helping Hands, an organization
in Boston that helps disabled persons find employment. They are looking for
someone who can provide apprenticeship opportunities in indexing. She has
placed one client with an indexer in Philadelphia, and is looking for a
position for another. If you think you can help, please contact

WAIS has been developed more fully, I believe, i.e., in a more sophisticated
and proprietary version. Also, Matt Koll's PLS (Personal Library
Software) has been incorporating these technqiues for quite a few
years now. It (PLS) is used in a number of large, full document,
Fortune 500 situations, and also for the US Code on CD-ROM (full text)
and for the full text version of Congressional Quarterly online.

Jessica -- After sending you an e-mail message, it occurred to me that
there might be a mailing list for WAIS discussions. And, sure enough,
there are two: WAIS-DISCUSSION, for discussions on general electronic
publishing issues in general and WAIS in particular (moderated), and
WAIS-TALK, for implementors and developers of WAIS.

To subscribe to WAIS-DISCUSSION, send an e-mail message to

     WAIS-DISCUSSION-REQUEST@THINK.COM

and in the body of the message, enter

     ADD WAIS-DISCUSSION
or
     SUBSCRIBE WAIS-DISCUSSION

And, to subscribe to the WAIS-TALK mailing list, send a message to

     WAIS-TALK-REQUEST@THINK.COM

and in the body of the message, enter

     ADD WAIS-TALK
or
     SUBSCRIBE WAIS-TALK

(Note: The info I have uses the ADD command; however, I've found that
the ADD command doesn't always work and that they prefer the SUBSCRIBE
or SUB command instead.)

BTW, if you have access to Usenet newsgroups, there's also a newsgroup,
ALT.WAIS, which may be helpful. Good luck ... and please let us know
what you find out.

Subject: Indexers Working Group Meeting at AAUP Conference

This information about the indexing session at the AAUP
conference next month was sent by Lys Ann Shore, one of the
organizers of the conference.

WHAT: Indexers' working group meeting on the future of indexing:
"Indexing and the Information Superhighway."

WHEN: Tuesday, June 21, 3:45-5:00

WHERE: At the Omni Shoreham Hotel, Washington, DC, where the AAUP
meeting is taking place. A notice will be posted at/near the
AAUP registration desk to announce the exact location.

WHO: Indexers, in-house editors who assign indexing, people
knowledgeable about/interested in electronic publishing.

WHY: One of the key advantages of the electronic book is the
reader;s ability to search text fast, efficiently, and in various
ways. But if a search is to yield more than a simple
concordance, someone has to choose key terms--in effect, make an
index. What should the index of an electronic book or CD-ROM
look like, and whose job will it be to prepare it?

CONTACT: Anne Gibbons (205-752-5945) or Lys Ann Shore (219-287-
3935)

Michael Jensen, electronic manuscript specialist and University
of Nebraska Press, has expressed willingness to speak to the
group. Lys Ann and or Anne will also speak very briefly, but the
main purpose will be to have an energetic and productive
roundtable discussion.
