Re CINDEX: thank you Paula, Christine and Anne for advice and addresses.
Yes, Anne, I recently joined IASC, and have found it very useful. As for
The Indexer, I find the contributions to be learned, articulate and
very funny. Unfortunately, i have to take a break during July and August
while we buy a house and settle in Ontario, but I hope to be back at it
(indexing) soon. Thanks again, everyone.

----------------------------Original message----------------------------

The thesaurus software system, created by the U.S. Department of Energy's
Office of Scientific and Technical Information to maintain the large Energy
Technology Data Exchange International Energy Thesaurus. This thesaurus
contains about 27,000 entries. The software provides for creation of thesauri
with automatic reciprocal generation (or deletion). It supports the following
relationship types: broader term, narrower term, related term, used for, seen
from, use and see. It notifies the creator of possible logical errors,
maintains the date entered, date of last change, allows for scope notes and
definitions and allows status codes. The software is written in FORTRAN for DEC
VAX running the VMS operating system. The software is available from the Energy
Science and Technology Software Center (615-576-2606 or e-mail
estsc@adonis,osti.gov).

If I can provide additional information I will or ask the software creator. I
only use it and I think it works beautifully.

The next message will contain a file of utility software that you may
occasionally find useful. Folks who do content analysis (qualitative
research) often do word frequency lists. Folks who do bibliometrics often do
term frequency lists. The files in this kit walk you through doing both, but
you can also do a transition point analysis of the term frequency list to
come up with candidate terms for indexing.

There are no guarantees. The term frequency list might be valuable for
any text. Using the transition point will work with fairly focused documents
like journal articles, but not for literary texts.

Let me know how it goes,

Norm, you can't send binary files by e-mail. Maybe you could upload

                         SUMMER MEETING

                         10:00-12:00 am

The agenda will include reports from the annual meeting
in San Diego, a behind-the-scenes look at Index-l, and a
cruise of the internet.

Following the meeting we will adjourn for lunch at a local
     restaurant.

     Directions:

From Route 17, take exit 70S to Route 201 South. Follow 201
South across the Susqehanna River Bridge to Vestal. Stay to
the left after the bridge and exit to Route 434 East. You
will see signs directing you to the Campus. Upon entering
the campus, you will pass an information booth on the right.
After the booth, stay to the right and follow the West drive
to the second parking lot on the left--parking lot J. There
should be ample places for parking.

Due to construction at the entrance to the Science Library,
and the fact that the library will not be open to the public
at that hour, it will be necessary to assemble in the
parking lot to be led into the library. For that reason it
is important to know who will be coming so that we can wait
     until all have arrived.

Dear Indexers,

  Norm:

You included a uuencoded version of a zipped program without
telling us:

  a) what computer it runs on
  b) how to convert it so it would run
  c) where to get another copy
  d) who wrote it and how we can get questions answered about it.

I would have preferred if you would have posted this information
to the list first, and only if demand was proven published it
to the list.

  Whoever remarked on mailing binaries:

It is possible to encode binary files in such a way that they
can be represented in printable ascii characters. In order to
run them, you have to run the file through a conversion program
like uudecode or Binhex, to convert the ascii characters back to
an executable binary.

  To members of the list:

In the future, I hope that those who would post copies of software
would give us the opportunity to request it, or ftp it, before they
give it to us.

Subject: Index-L archives in gopher format

----------------------------Original message----------------------------
The Index-L listserv archives from October 1993-date are now available in a
gopher format at Georgia Southern University. If you have access to a gopher
client, point it at this address: informer.cc.gasou.edu. If you don't have a
gopher client, then use a telnet command to connect to our campus
information system (gsvms2.cc.gasou.edu, username: info) and you can pick up
the gopher on the main info menu.

The Index-L files are in the "Henderson Library" area of the gopher. So far,
I have the archived listserv records month by month back until October 1993.
Charlotte and I are working to retrieve the older records from tape storage
and move them to the new gopher site. I also have some basic information up
about ASI and Key Words, although I am very aware that the listserv and the
GSU site are not officially sanctioned ASI activities.

The Index-L area will be growing over the next few weeks. I intend to add
basic information about other indexing organizations and publications, a
running list of conferences and meetings for indexers (extracted from
Index-L postings), and whatever else seems worthwhile. I also intend to set
up a WAIS-type index system for the listserv archives. To facilitate
retrieval through this type of program, the future listserv archives will be
kept in weekly segments rather than monthly segments (according to Charlotte
and her computer center), and I'll work (probably over the summer) to break
up the existing monthly groups into smaller weekly groups.

I would welcome comments, suggestions, etc. on this project. The gopher
system is very flexible, and I can move stuff around and add other stuff at
will.

Julius

----------------------------Original message----------------------------
Is anyone aware of any work which has been done on the
'cost-benefits' of indexes? I am often asked for 'further'
information on my indexing skills, particularly from technical
author companies. In response I would like to highlight specific
time-saving benefits and therefore cost benefits to the users of
documents with indexes, as opposed to those without.

It would be useful to quote specific figures in such instances
but this obviously requires some research.

Any ideas?
Many thanks,
