I'd like to use itals for the table locators rather than annotate the subentries. What's a good way of handling that when the table falls somewhere in a range of pages? The books I randomly pulled off my shelf (couldn't find just this sort of case in any of my indexing sources) handled it this way (* indicates start/end of itals): marriage, 23-30, *24* Do any of you do this differently? Maybe I'm being overly fussy, but the out-of-sequence *look* of the locator bothers me; I feel like the reader should be made to notice that the "24" is part of the range, perhaps by doing it this way: marriage, 23-30 (*24*) (I know, it *is* overly fussy.) My microwave cookbook contains entries like this: browning, 23, 26, *26* presumably because page 26 contains not only an illustration but accompanying text. This seems ridiculous to me. Since most illustrations are not full-page, pages that contain indexable illustrations or tables will more often than not contain related text. That treatment would make for an awful lot of double locators. Comments? Cheers, Carol Roberts, indexer, copy editor Carol.Roberts@mixcom.com P.S. It's nice to back on the list. I was out of touch for a while there, moving my family to Milwaukee. Work/play/love/philosophy goes on. In June I celebrated my first year as a full-time freelance indexer; I'm loving it more than ever, now that I've learned to walk. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 19 Aug 1994 17:00:20 ECT Reply-To: Indexer's Discussion Group Sender: Indexer's Discussion Group From: Helene.Craig@bsf.ulaval.ca Subject: Thesaurus software ----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Hi everyone!
