Then you'll see the link information, which you can mail, save to a local file or download (as with any gopher document). This reference desk is definitely five-star, and is part of a great gopher at the UC Irvine. Another good reference collection is at Texas Tech University's gopher: gopher.cs.ttu.edu. His table (p. 210) doesn't figure it by number of characters but by page size, number of columns, and point size. The bottom line is that the maximum number of lines (this happens to be for a 6 1/8 x 9 1/4 page, three columns, in 7-point type) is only 231. From that number, you're supposed to subtract 50 lines for spacing between alphabetic groups, 5 to 15 lines for sinkage (to have "Index" at the top of first page of index), and another 20% to 50% for turnover lines. Ouch. I hope this book is only 75 pages long. Anyway, that's Wellisch's computation. Anyone care to comment? I don't have Nancy Mulvaney's new book in my greedy hands (soon, I hope), so I can't say whether it contains computations of that sort. Good luck, and congrats on your first index! RUN to your libray and get the FOURTEENTH edition of the Chicago Manual of Style. See sections 17.65 through 17.68 about this question; that should give you some idea of what to ask the publisher. As Chicago Manual says, indexes are usually set in type that is two points smaller than the body text (So, what point size does your book use? Usually 10 or12). Also, the typeface itself makes a big difference. Some are designed to wider than others--take a look at some of the books you read. Another variable in today's computerized publishing world is our ability to "squeeze" or "spread" type ever so slightly to fit a predefined space. Many times we have tightened up the letterspacing by 0.5% to avoid having only a line or two that goes beyond the pages reserved for the index. One-half of a percent is almost imperceptible in an index. Good luck--and remember that sometimes the folks who have the responsibility of working with freelancers are as mystified by all this letterspacing and word-counting as you are, so talk with your publisher. I've been lurking for a few months, and I have a question I'd like to pose, although I'm afraid the answer is "grit your teeth." I edit/typeset/layout a quarterly on genealogy. The next issue is to have an index of every name that appeared in the current volume, numbers 1,2,3 and 4. I use Ventura Desktop Publisher 3.0, and it has an indexing program that looks for a certain code and constructs a file that can be laid out into an index. The question: Has anyone written an alogrithm to make this easier? Some articles have 500 names in them (I am not kidding; when you run a transcription of marriage records for one county for three years, you've got a lot of names!) Right now, I am manually inserting for each name something that looks like this: <$Crowe, Mary Elizabeth Powell> Of course, sometimes the name is like that in text, sometimes as Mary Elizabeth Powell Crowe, sometimes as M. E. P. Crowe and so on. It's all the various permutations a name can appear in that makes it hard for me figure out how to get around doing it the way I am now. Besides the fact that it's tedious, I am afraid I'll miss some when my eyes start glazing over. Any suggestions?
