I'm an established copy editor and a future indexer :o) eager to meet (among others) indexers who specialize in scholarly philosophy texts. (That's my area of specialization as a freelance copy editor. By day, I do other sorts of editing.) Anybody interested in doing a little mentoring at the May conference? For the benefit of those who have to pay for every blessed piece of e-mail they receive, feel free to respond to me personally rather than posting to the list. Last year's group said "more on software," but not the sort of software I've seen discussed on this list lately. The members of my audience are indexers by necessity (and rarely by choice). They need to use the same software they used to produce their publications, in order to insert the index tags directly in the source files. There are three categories of software to consider: markup languages (such as SGML or TeX), publishing software (such as FrameMaker), and word processing software (Word or WordPerfect). I don't think much of the third category, but I do have good things to say about markup and FrameMaker. I'm interested in hearing what other indexers think of these methods of producing indexes, especially advantages/disadvantages. Thanks, --Dick vacca@wingra.com
