I have not found any relevant rules in the sources where I have looked. Perhaps someone can help. I am indexing a book on the Civil War which includes many place names. I asked the editor how state names should be indexed (spelled out, abbreviated, or postal codes): Raymond, Mississippi Raymond, Miss. or Raymond, MS She decided on the postal code, but I am wondering whether this is appropriate, given this is a book on a subject that predates postal codes. Or am I being silly? I would appreciate any thoughts on this, as I do not normally index books with many place names. Thanks for any thoughts on this. At UW Madison we approach indexing from a theoretical basis. I am also doing at paper on the "virtual library" as part of an Independent study. One of the major issues is indexing the internet as we all know. Before I took 817 I had no Idea how interesting this could all be ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1993 09:18:05 ECT Reply-To: Indexer's Discussion Group Sender: Indexer's Discussion Group From: Charlotte Skuster Subject: Index-l archives We are running out of disk space for archives.
